Constructed Wetland Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems
A practical, flexible, and economical means to treat wastewater
Although under development in Europe for more than 25 years, the use of natural systems to treat wastewater is still an emerging technology in the United States. However, there has been much progress in recent years. In the U.S., natural systems are used predominantly in the South, Southwest, and Western states. With the development of cold weather designs in Minnesota, many upper Midwestern states have begun to consider and permit these types of systems. In 2005, Weaver Boos obtained the first permit issued for a constructed wetland system designed to serve the needs of a small Illinois municipality.
Natural wastewater treatment systems can be very practical alternatives given the right setting. They offer significant advantages over traditional mechanical systems in semi-rural and slowly urbanizing areas, where access to a municipally-owned treatment plant may be miles (or years) away. They also have practical applications for industrial operations that wish to operate in semi-rural communities. Weaver Boos is spearheading feasibility studies and system design for a number of clients with a wide range of applications.
Experience has shown the cost to build a natural system is competitive when compared to the cost of more traditional "package" treatment plants. However, when operational natural systems require significantly less oversight and maintenance. Operational expenses on an annual basis are very small. When evaluated over a 30-50 year operational life, natural systems can offer significant cost savings.
